Personal Statement: I’ve been with Ashlar since it began nearly 30 years ago. Before I began my academic life, I was an artist in Berkeley, California: dancer, actor, singer and I wrote. My continued passion is working multi-culturally, perhaps because I am -- Guatemalan, Irish and Scottish. My formal work started in the early 1980's when I arranged a large African Dance Camp and brought in some wonderful teachers from Africa. Learning took place on many levels other than dance. This got me started on communication and all things multi-cultural and as I moved along, I saw that within communities, there are often disparate cultures which are important to identify in terms of communication across difference. Trauma resolution is part of my work in the exclusivity education and training I do. On a personal note, I am a mother of grown sons whose values make me proud. I am a gardening junkie. I love all things that have to do with gardens, the planning, the making, the appreciation and yes, cooking what comes from them. I take many of my recipes from other cultures which is really a lot of fun. My sons represent some of my most rewarding experiences. My other great loves are my husband -- together we do yoga, gardening, cooking and writing articles, essays and chapters. Focusing my creativity balances my life -- I live with the beauty of a half finished manuscipt about a young women and trans-formative events. Yoga and good eating balance my body.
